Emanuel Ungaro Goddess Dress
Designed by Emanuel Ungaro in 1974, this is the dress that has come to be known as the 1970s Goddess Dress. Long, flowing and beautifully draped, it has a deep V neckline, pleated bodice, wide bias-cut midriff and a wonderfully full skirt that moves with you.
The clever bit is in the construction. The bodice panels are pleated into the wide midriff, while the back straps cross over and gather into loops at the back. It is one of those patterns where the finished dress looks wonderfully complicated, but the real magic is in the way the pieces have been designed to create that effortless, flowing shape.
And this isn't just any old 1970s dress pattern. It is a Vogue Paris Original by Emanuel Ungaro, featured in the November/December 1974 issue of Vogue Patterns.
“Did Cheryl Tiegs wear Emanuel Ungaro's Goddess Dress?”
In 1975, supermodel Cheryl Tiegs appeared in a Virginia Slims advertisement wearing a flowing green gown remarkably similar to Emanuel Ungaro's 1974 Vogue Paris Original 1135 - the pattern now affectionately known as the Goddess Dress.
Offered here as: Paper Pattern. This pattern is also available as a PDF Download.
